Fur Flies as Faculty Frets %^F faculty and staff. By JOHN GHOLDSTON Last week fur seemed to fly around the faculty and staff. Rumors about everything from staff discounts in the bookstore being discontinued to the iRegentsgivingthemselvesal000%raise flew with the fur. But the big point ^was that faculty and staff could no longer obtain six free hours of classes per quarter for either themselves or their spouses. This is one of the benefits a faculty or staff member has been able to enjoy in the past. In order to quelch at least one rumor that reached the FuTUre's Office the Regents do not now, nor have they ever received a salary. (1,000% raise from $0 = $0). However, several of the other rumors are not rumors at all. Word did indeed come from the Regents that the free hours for faculty and staff would be discontinued by the Spring 1970 quarter. Also the faculty and staff discount in the bookstore and any discounts for athletic and campus events will be discontinued. Although Tech received the order from the Regents they received it from W. Samuel Tucker, the Secretary of Administration for the State and none of them seemed too happy about it. In fact, Robert B. Mautz, Chancellor of the Board of Regents sent a letter to Tucker dated February 5 statins in no uncertain terms his feelings about the order. That letter has been reprinted on page 2. Action was not restricted to the Chancellor, however, as Staff members at Tech formed their own "Employee Petition Committee" and passed a petition around the University asking for signatures to be sent to the Regents requesting a rescind on the order. Pressure on Tucker's office caused him to modifv his order slightlv allowing now just faculty and staff members (not spouses) to attend free classes through the Spring Quarter, but no more. There was nothing said about the discount in the bookstore or prices of tickets for As to why Tucker wants a stop put on the 20 year old practices no one but Tucker seems to be positive. His statement concerning the issue was "from a budgetary point of view, the [Cost of prerequisites must be reviewed as part of the overall compensation plan and this additional cost could be substantial." What the results of the petition, similar copies of which are ostensibly circulating around several other state universities will be is anyone's guess. Tucker seems to be adamant, and so do the Regents. See page 2 for the letter Mautz sent to Tucker. We Live in the Present By the Past, but for the. . FTU Has Eye On Zoning by HENRY POPKIN A plan for a change in the zoning of tbe land bordering the campus was submitted about six months ago and is presently under consideration by the Tri-County planning board and the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission. As of yet, the plan has not been adopted, but it is being utilized by the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission. Mr. John P. Goree, the Vice-President for Business Affairs at Fla. Tech. described the proposed plan as being this: all land extending out for two miles from the perimeter of the campus boundaries will be under this plan. The land may also be used for commercial, or residential zoning, provided that a complete land plan is submitted to the proper accredited board and approved of. Other features still yet are that all buildings must be 100 feet from the road, and driveways at least 100 feet from any corner. Also land will be designated and set aside for schools and parks within each mile of land encompassed. The advantage of the plan would be to protect Florida Technological University from the influx of small businesses crowding around the campus, and creating at the same time a planned and controlled environment surrounding the campus that would enhance, not u~.„ downgrade, the image of our new OKAY, ball. I m the president see, and you are going into the basket." university. FTU Prexy Charles Millican gives the ball a few last instructions before As for now, the existing zoning hurling it toward the basket during a special free throw contest ordinances are only in effect one Wednesday evening among presidents of local schools. Dr. Millican gave it quarter mile around the boundaries the new college try. of the campus. An example of this is the University Residence which are subdivided into three variances which are UR-1, UR-2, and UR-3, all of which allow only residential dwellings to be constructed within the zoning classification. S.G. to Present Announcements Student Government plans to present 10 graduation announcements to each graduating senior. The $2.50 worth of announcements may be picked up during the beginning of March at a stand that will be set up in the LLRB Lobby. Any student desiring more than 10 announcements may order more at the bookstore at 25 cts. apiece. Orders will be taken in March. The announcements are white with black print and are folded over once. Graduation will be held June 14 at 3 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium. CAMPUS GLANCES President and Mrs. Millican would like to personally meet as many FTU students as possible, and so on Tuesday, February 24, 10:30 A.M. they cordially invite all students to a coffee in the President's Dining Room in the Village Center. Miss FTU Pageant Scheduled By SG Student Government is sponsoring the First Annual "Miss FTU Pageant" scheduled for April 25 at the Union Park Junior High School Auditorium. Student Health Center To Charge For Drugs A sign appeared on the door of the Student Health Center this week which reads "Drug Charges under $1.00 Payable Upon Receipt At This Office. Over $1.00 May Be Paid Now Or Within Two Weeks At F & A." Before this charges for any drugs issued by the Center were subtracted from the $ 15 deposit fee any new students for the Health Center should have at least one dollar with him to pay for drug charges. The Health Service assured the FuTUre that any student will be treated, whether he is clutching a dollar or not. So, while the rest of the country is Picture Of The Week had to pay at registration. This is following in line with the policy in the Library of no longer taking over-due book charges or Xerox charges off the Student Deposit fee. The reason for this change in policy, according to Joseph Gomez, Comptroller of the University, was heading toward it, FTU seems to be chiefly the expense encumbered by the volumes of book-work caused by any fees paid out from the deposit money. "The deposit money was designed to be used for any breakage in a classroom situation, like test tubes or other items of small equipment. Also if a student leaves the University or graduates with any outstanding debts they will be taken from the deposit money," said Gomez. He also pointed out that the University requires that when a student's deposit fee falls below $5 he must bring the money back up to $15.00. This, Gomez pointed out, would cause tremendous problems at registration causing delay and inconvenience to the students trying to pay before they can register. From now on any student heading taking a step away from its own little private form of socialized medicine. Campus Glances All seniors to graduate in June should have their applications for graduation filed with the Registrar's Office. If this action has not been completed, the senior should report to the Registrar immediately. 'Steps in the graduation process' are furnished on page 59 of the 1969-1970 General Bulletin. Seniors should not hesitate to contact personnel in the Registrar's Office for assistance.
