Volume 13 Future Friday, November 14, 1980 LIBRARY ,-afiCHIMES University of Central Florida No. li Center's problems solvable by Doug Marks and Michael Brach Associate editor contributing writer The new Health Center is not perfect but it is a vast improvement over the old facility. The biggest problem, said Dr. Edward Stoner, health services director is that the emergency room does not have a receiving corridor at the loading ramp. "That stinks. It's the lousy way it's designed. The door to the emergency room is right at the loading ramp," Stoner said. Dirt from the parking lot could blow into the room. Another problem is the door to the X-rav room. A patient on a stretcher could not get into the room because the X-rav shield will get in the way, Stoner said. The entry will have to be redesigned. Stoner said he never saw the specifications lor the new building. "We did have input ol what we needed, but the architect's view ol what we need and how to construct it was two different things." "He (Stoner) has seen all the plans and the specifications,'! said Richard Lavender, campus architect al UCF1. "I don't know what his problem is but he just doesn't remember." Stoner said he had nothing to do with the planning of the layout ol the new facilities. Lavender said, "He was consulted from day one1." Lavender said Stoner saw the plans before construction started. "There was plenty ol time to correct the problem," Lavender said. "When buildings are being built, the architects should consult the occupants as to their heeds and .then limit the building around those needs rather than their dreams," said Stoner. There is a room designated a.s a classroom but once* a conference table is put in there will not be much room left. "It's just too small," Stoner said. Stoner said the new lacilitv is far superior lo the current facility. ''Even a box of sardines is heaven compared to this place," he said of the existing health center. The new health center is not a hospital. "We won't do anv surgery., "Stoner said. However, students who have surgery can recover at the health center, saving money. Wild art Artist George Lorio is featured in the art gallery on the third floor in the Fine Arts building. The picture to the left sells for $1500. Lorio also is presenting his porcelain toilet. (Future photos by Kevin Mason.) SAGA denied clean bill of health by Kathleen Foronda Future staff UCF's SAGA food service max have cleaned up its 13 health safety violations since Oct. 2, but an Orange County health inspector said there is still room lor improvement. Health inspector Kathv Weaver cheeked Nov. 10 and marked down uneleaned milk dispensers in the cafeteria, no coverings (sneeze guards) on the self-serve soup and salad areas and a lack of .shelving in the storage room. '•Equipment has to be off the floor tor cleaning purpose's. They either have to put it up or get rid of that unused equipment," Weaver said. She also said SAGA employees were taking too much meat out of the freezer at one time. As a result, chicken or beef left to defrost to room tem perature allows bacteria to grow, according to Weaver. To correct this, SAGA director Bob Stage said meat will now be stocked in reach-in refrigerators closer to the kitchen so that smaller portions ol meat can be taken out. Prior to Stage's change, meat was stocked in the main freezer in the back of the building. Weaver will inspect the premises again in about two weeks. Inspections have caused Stage to have 23 of SAGA's 84 full-time and student employees certified in food management. However, onlv one person is required to take the four hour class. Basic sanitation and food handling are taught through films and slides. Weaver said. Ol the 13 violations Weaver found on Oct. 2, roach infestation and unsanitary ice-cream service were the most severe. Stage said SAGA has discontinued its contract with Getz Exterminators. The Get/, companv was not spraying on a regular basis, according to Stage. Since then. Stage said SAGA has been doing its own exterminating. He said discussions are now being held with Orkin Exterminators to spray the dining areas and kitchen' in addition.to SAGA's own spraying. "The initial clean-out will leave some dead bugs for a couple of days, so Orkin will draw up a statement to tell the students about the spraying;" Stage said. Residents will receive flyers in their mail boxes and information will be posted on bulletin boards for all other students, Stage said. Students used to be able to dip their own ice cream, but that service has been discontinued. "It someone is going to get sick it's because of improper handling of tood," said Weaver. Library needs twice the space Plans are being made to double the size of the UCF library. The Florida Board of Regents' standards require the library to hold 25 percent of the student body. The library currently holds 5 percent. Library Director Lynn Walker said, "I doubt if 9 out ol the 10 Florida state colleges have seating for 25 percent of their students, but the other colleges are not as bad off for space as UCF." Walker said he hopes to get all the other departments out when the library is expanded. Last year the state legislature allocated $440,000 to UCF to plan the expansion. A statement of the building needs is being drawn up and will be submitted to the BOR for approval. UCF will request $6 million for the expansion at the spring legislature session.
