Jim Donovan, director of Development, is busy handing out cigars these days. He and his wife, Janet, welcomed a new daughter to the Donovan clan Friday. Weighing in at 7 lbs., 9 oz., Katie Colleen joins sister Kelly Christine at home. CHARGE 'Coach " Colbourn watches Orlando Mayor Bill Frederick eye the ball. . . . to boom the ball downfield as UCF kicked off its first fall Homecoming ever Saturday evening in the Tangerine Bowl. The game between the Knights and SUNY at Albany capped a fun-filled week of festivities on campus that included everything from a carnival and parade (see photo on page 3) to a dance, barbecue, and half-time crowning of Russ Doerk and Angela Abbott as king and queen. The only damper was the final score— 28-27—with the Knights on the short end. Campus crime: a concern Campus cops have much better things to do than hand out parking tickets, although students who have been stung with citations might argue the point. Ticketing drivers for violations just happens to be the most visible act by police, who'd be the first to admit their jobs would be much easier if everyone would abide by traffic regulations. But there are more important things. With the revelation in the national press that campus crime is climbing at an alarming rate, and with FBI reports to substantiate it, UCF police sometimes feel like the boy with his finger in the dike. . No matter how hard they try to stem the tide, it's become obvious that the larger the University becomes, the more campus crime increases. Even while statistics show UCF ranks at the bottom of the list among member universities in Florida's State University System in reported crimes of violence and property crimes, Chief John Smith is not a happy man. "Let's just say we've been lucky so far," Smith commented. He's glad to report that violent crimes (murder, aggravated assault, forcible rape, robbery, and non- negligent manslaughter) are virtually non-existent on campus. "But at the same time," he added, "we are seeing an increase in thefts." In offices, dorms, laboratories, parking lots, and classrooms, the percentage of property crime is rising. A major contributing factor, according to Ed Moloney, police investigator, is the mistaken illusion that a university campus is some sort of sanctuary where crime takes a holiday. "This kind of thinking gives students and employees the false notion that it can't happen here," Moloney said.
