University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida 32816 Wednesday, January 20, 1 982 Volume 4, Number 20 Non-Profit Organization Bulk Rate Postage Paid Permit No. 3575 Orlando, Florida 32816 Address Correction Requested 2 E LIBRARY ARCHIVES The UCF Report News and Announcements for the Faculty and Staff of the University of Central Florida Knight Notes There hardly seems a day when one does not see a student, faculty or staff member doing a bit of jogging on or near campus. If what Bill Buchalter reported in his Jan. 14 Sentinel Star column, the occurs, the runners we might see on May 30-31 on campus really will be speeded up. Buck says the Track Athletic Congress "hopes to talk with [UCF] officials" about holding an Olympic sprint development camp here those dates in connection with the 1982 Golden South Classic at Winter Park's Showalter Field. On your marks! Get set! Go? Next time you are in the University Library on a Monday or a Thursday afternoon, pause in the lobby to examine the magazines and books that are being sold at pre-, pre- inflation prices. There's been a first-floor area set aside for.the UCF Foundation so it can conduct its book sales on a twice-a-week schedule, instead of holding off for semiannual sales. Meet Dorothy Waganhurst of Chuluota, who has generously volunteered to staff the area from 2 to.4 p.m. those two days a week. As for those bargaines! Magazines only 5 cents, or six for a quarter. And books! Why, the low, low prices get as low as 25 cents to just one dollar! New material is added to shelves as space permits. Too, you're encouraged to become a browser! Tubbs now Student Affairs VP LeVester Tubbs, associate vice president for Student Affairs at UCF since July 1 980, has been designated vice president of the Division of Student Affairs, effective immediately. "Lee Tubbs has made significant contributions to the University in the short time he has been here," said President Colbourn in making the announcement. "He has demonstrated knowledge, background and ability to work with students, faculty, and the community, qualities vital to the effectiveness of his office." Tubbs was appointed to his post in the UCF administration from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, where he had been vice chancellor for student affairs. He also had served as director of development and dean of students at Lincoln University, and had filled faculty and administrative positions at North Carolina A&T University, Allen University, and in the Palm Beach Public Schools. He is a native of Panama City, Fla., where he graduated from high school and where his parents still reside. Women get graduate study plan Women with their eyes on the future can shape new careers for themselves in high technology by enrolling in a unique new graduate degree program in engineering to begin at UCF this summer. - Known as the Women's Reentry Program, it will provide women who have been away from the classroom, and those contemplating career changes, the opportunity to earn a master's degree in any of four areas in engineering that are in growing demand. Those accepted for Reentry can select from four optional fields of study leading to the master of science degree: engineering administration, operations research, engineering systems analysis or computer systems. Qualifications limit eligibility to women who have received a bachelor's degree not less than two years ago, and whose college major was in mathematics, engineering, physics or other applied sciences. A (Continued on Page 4) 'Your sunshine feels so-o-o good!' It was mighty tempting for five of these college of health deans to see if they could justify extension of their 21/2-day trip to sunny Central Florida, compared to the sub-zero blizzard conditions from whence they had just come. Arriving at UCF last week for discussions on mutual College of Health Deans Group topics were (from left) David Gale, Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Va.; Sidney Rodenberg, Wichita (Kan.) State University; John Haverty, Georgia State (Atlanta) University; Ruth Leventhal, Hunter College, Manhatten N.Y.; Aaron Andrews, Ferris State College, Big Rapids, Mich.; and their UCF host, Own Elder Jr. Discussion items included allied health professions school accreditation trends, clinical practice plans and formalization of the deans' group. CC. Miller Temporary AD job to Dean Miller CC. Miller, dean of the College of Education, has been named acting director of athletics at UCF and will serve this additional capacity until a permanent athletic director is selected. A new search committee, about to be named, will begin by reviewing the criteria for the position, then examine all current candidates. President Colbourn named Miller to the post Jan. 1 3 following a four- month search for a permanent AD. A search committee, which had evaluated applications from more than 140 candidates, was disbanded last week after no final candidate was selected. "This is a very important position at this stage of the University's development," Colbourn explained, "and we would rather patiently seek the best person for the job. I feel Dean Miller can handle the necessary administration and coordination of the University's intercollegiate athletic program in the interim " In his capacity as dean of education, Miller also had served as the University administrator in charge of intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation programs from 1968 until 1978, when the athletic programs were moved under the direct supervision of the president. "Cal Miller has been in charge of our athletic policies and procedures in the past," Colbourn added, "and I am confident he can provide strong leadership for the program until a permanent director is selected."
