University of Central Florida P.O. Box 25000 Orlando, Florida 32816 Address Correction Requested U 6 F LIBRARY ARCHIVES Non-Profit Organization U.S. Postage Paid Orlando, Florida Permit No. 3575 The UCF Report Volume 6, Number 5 for the Faculty and Staff Wednesday, August 31,1983 One of a kind Dan Huffier is a citizen who gives generously of his time to support University of Central Florida. The Winter Park stock broker found Tuesday, Aug.23 a bit out of the ordinary, even for his enthusiasm. He had scheduled and attended three meetings, one for the UCF annual golf tourney, of which he is chairman; one for the Business and Industries Committee of the President's Council, of which he is a team captain, and the Booster's Club, of which he is a director. He is also a director of the UCF Foundation, but that board didn't meet that day. Books onlyshut off for week The week long shut off of library service, scheduled to begin Sept. 17, only affects circulating books, Lynn LaBrake, associate director, stressed today. "While we move our book collection from the old to the new building the rest of the library will remain open and available for use," she said. "For about a week, beginning on that Saturday, we will have to close the fifth floor of the old buillding and the fourth floor of the new, in order to transfer our book collection. "So far the builder has held to that date. Of course our plans are subject to any changes due to construction problems," she said. Mrs. LaBrake repeats the advice to faculty to schedule class work around the closing so students can check out needed material ahead of time, or later. Interest rate made attractive for small U.S. bond buyers United States Savings Bonds have taken a giant step into today's highly competitive savings and investment world, W. Rex Brown, university coordinator of the 1983 campaign, told The Report. Brown pointed out that the interest rate for Series EE Bonds is now tied to marketable securities. These bonds earn 85 percent of the average yield on five-year Treasury securities. There is also a guaranteed minimum return to protect bondholders from a sharp drop in market rates. Before the change, EE bonds were earning nine percent interest when held to an eight-year maturity. With the change, if market rates are 13 percent, for example, bonds will earn about 11 percent interest, a good return for a minimum savings of only $25 — the price of a $50 bond, he said. Brown reminded that everyone working for UCF will be contacted by a volunteer who can talk further about a payroll deduction for savings bonds. • •• In addition to the sectional coordinators named last week, the following persons are giving their time until the end of the campaign on Sept.22: Linda Bonta, Business Affairs/F&A/- Budget; Johnny Blackwood, Computer Center; Mary Lou Burgess, Internal Auditing; Walter Mitchell, Physical Plant; Shannon Addison, Personnel. Also, Ted Chester, Purchasing/Aux.- / Admin. Services; Neil LaBar, Intercollegiate Athletics; Loretta Webb, Police Dept., and Evelyn Alford, Community Relations/University Dev./Office of the President. A late addition to the list of workers is John F. Bergner, College of Health. BCC/UCF center first of its kind All academic roads lead to Cocoa the morning of Thursday, Sept.1, 1983. Credit Union advises ida combines with Brevard Community College in dedicating the $5.8 million, 109,000 square foot Lifelong Learning Center. It will be the first such cooperative in Florida. The junior college and the university will share the building, offering students a chance to earn a two year and a four year degree under the same roof. Dual enrollment is one feature of the innovative combination. Among those expected to attend the dedication are state officials from Tallahassee, members of the Board of Regents and Community College Division, BCC and UCF officials, BCC board members and Brevard County officials. Watch all those extra charges on your low interest car loan In an effort to clear the way for new models, car dealers and manufacturers are offering attractive deals on their remaining '83 models. For those in the market for a new car, now is a prime time for shopping around, advises Skip Hickman, manager of the UCF Federal Credit Union. "But before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you get all the facts about financing your purchase," she said. "Remember, the final cost to you includes the purchase AND the interest costs." As a guide for prospective purchasers, she offers these points to consider before making a decision: * How big must the down payment be in order to take advantage of the quoted or advertised interest rate? * Which models qualify for the lower rate? * Is the purchase of "extras" or an extended service contract required to qualify for the rate? * What is the "blue book" allowance for a possible trade-in? * What is the cash price for the car? "You really must compare the quoted cash figure with the price of the car before financing charges," Hickman cautioned. "Many dealers must subsidize their so-called lower interest rates by jacking up the final cost of the car." The UCF Federal Credit Union is currently offering new car loans at 13 percent. And unlike many other lending institutions, the Credit Union does not access extra charges for processing a loan application, securing a credit check or servicing the account. Also, as an added benefit to members, the Credit Union provides loan protection insurance free of charge which would pay off an outstanding loan completely in case of death. "Let our staff help you make the best deal on a new car," Hickman added. "Drop by the office anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays for the low- down on a low-cost auto loan." President Trevor Colbourn and The Committee to Establish the Charles N. Millican Endowed Chair of Computer Science Cordially invite you to attend the dedication ceremony for The Charles N. Millican Endowed Chair of Computer Science on Thursday, September 8, 1983, at 10:00 a. m. Computer Center University of Central Florida . ** Parking: Visitors Lot Refreshments following
