Established to provide UCF faculty and A&P personnel an opportunity to meet informally at the end of a work-day, the University Club will be open Monday through Friday, beginning Friday, Sept.18. Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. in- Suite 146. Until Oct. 1, enrollment in the club is free; after Oct. 1 the annual membership fee will be $10. The membership- card allows discounts on beverage purchases. Membership forms are being sent to all faculty and A&P personnel. Library "Flame", window dedication draws Mexican artist and celebrities The UCF Library will be the site of two significant events on Sep.9 with the unveiling of a bronze sculpture and the dedication of a stained glass window, both by the renowned Mexican artist, Leonardo Nierman. • The ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m., with dedication of the Flame of Hope, to be followed with the dedication of Genesis, the vivid stained glass that will be installed above the Library's main entrance. The Flame of Hope, rising nearly 10 feet from its base, was selected by a local committee from 59 entries. ARTIST NIERMAN FLAME OF HOPE CLOSED Due to the Labor Day holiday the Computer Center will be closed from midnight Sept. 6 to midnight Sept. 7. The main frame will operate in an unassisted mode, W. H. Branch, director, announced. STAFF COUNCIL The Staff Council will hold its August meeting on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Registrar's conference room. The meeting was postponed from a week earlier. Nierman's interpretation of the creation of the world appears in Genesis, which measures 15 by 13 feet. The $26,000 stained glass window is being donated to UCF by Mr.and Mrs.Sta'nley Young,of Boston, MA,longtime Nierrnan patrons,who will be present for the de- ■ dication. On hand for the dedication will be members of the Florida Board of Regents, state legislators, members of the Art in Public Places Committee and local officials. An original composition written exclusively for the occasion will be performed by the UCF Band. ' Nierman, who created the Flame of Hope and Genesis in the aftermath of Mexico's disastrous 1986 earthquake, which destroyed his studio and many of his works, is represented in public collections at more than 70 sites worldwide. Born in Mexico City, he graduated from the University of Mexico and was a classLcal violinist before turning to art some 30 years ago. Among his many achievements are a coveted life fellowship in London's Royal Society of the Arts, a gold medal "Presidential Award" from the Municipal Art League of Chicago, and top honors in contemporary art competition at the Art Institute of Mexico. In 1980, the Mexican government chose a Nierman tapestry to present to the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. The public is invited to attend the campus ceremonies. 'Day for Knights' to kick off season A downtown pep rally will help kick off the Knights football season when Festival Friday begins at noon, Sept. 4. Billed as a "Day for the Knights," the pep rally will feature Athletic Director and Head Coach Gene McDowell and his team, along with the UCF cheerleaders and marching band. The event will be held at the Barnett Bank Plaza at the corner of Church Street and Orange Avenue. "We're looking forward to Festival Friday as an exciting way to kick off our season," McDowell said, "and we want to share our optimism with the footbajl fans in Orlando." The event is being sponsored by Jaymont Realty and Downtown Orlando, Inc. in association with WDIZ Radio, the Radisson Plaza Hotel and Barnett Bank. UCF begins its season, which includes eight home games, Saturday, Sept. 5, in the Florida Citrus Bowl against Daytona Beach rival Bethune- Cookman College in the Central Florida Classic.
