./SRARV. .ftCHivr Volume 12, Number 19 The University of Central Florida Newspaper for Faculty and Staff April 18,1990 News Clips • Congratulations to Editor Rick Bigelow and his staff on the inaugural issue of The Cypress Dome, the student literary magazine. • Approximately 100 students from 16 community colleges in Florida competed for individual and team awards during the Mathematics Olympics held on March 31 here. Individuals and teams were tested on their knowledge of mathematics through intermediate calculus at the all-day event. The Mathematics Olympics was sponsored by the Central Horida Research Park, UCF's Center of Excellence in Mathematics, the mathematics department and the Office of Academic Affairs. • Forty outstanding Central Horida African-American students will be recognized for academic excellence and cultural accomplishment by the UCF Center Of Excellence on April 21. The Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Orlando will host the 5 p.m. installation of elementary and secondary students into the McKnight Achievers Society. • During a regularly scheduled meeting, April 12, the Faculty Senate elected Glenn Cunningham, chairman; Robert Flick, vice chairman; and Karen Biraimah, secretary. • The UCF Community Orchestra will give an outdoor concert at the reflecting pond April 18 at 7 p.m. □ Council To Draft UCF Strategic Plan President Steven Altman has charged a broadly-representative council with the job of shaping a data- based, action-oriented strategic plan that will guide UCF's development through the rest of the decade. In his first meeting with the council earlier this month, Altman told the panel (See membership listing on page 7) that the completion of a strategic plan is a high UCF priority. While it will build on the planning document completed in 1987, he said it will differ from the earlier document by being more action-based and priority-driven, and must spell out ways of implementing goals. Altman, who directed the crafting of a strategic plan at Texas A & I after assuming the presidency there, said the UCF theme will differ from the one at his former institution, which Please See Strategic Page 7 Cobb-Hooker Chair Occupied By 20-Yr. Veteran of Optics Research A national search for an eminent scholar to occupy the $1 million Cobb-Hooker Chair in Optical Sciences and Engineering at UCF has ended with the appointment of George I. A. Stege- man of the University of Arizona Optical Sciences Center. Stegeman brings with him an international reputation in optics- related research that began more than 20 years ago as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, where he was awarded his undergraduate and masters degrees and doctorate. Stegeman will be a full professor in the department of physics and is being considered for joint appointment with the department of electrical engineering. The Cobb-Hooker Chair was established in September 1988 with a gift of $625,000 from Cobb Partners Development, Inc., of Jacksonville, and L. J. Hooker Homes, the U.S. home building arm of Australia-based Hooker Corporation Limited. The gift was matched by the state to create the total endowment. The Cobb-Hooker Chair is the fourth to be fully funded at UCF. Additional chairs in banking, accounting and business administration have been pledged. □ Stay Tuned WUCF Report 2 Weeks Away A written report addressing questions regarding the mission of WUCF is two weeks in the offing after a three member committee heard comments Friday from individuals representing diverse listening preferences. Committee chairman Ted Clevenger, FSU dean of the College of Communication, Robert DuBord, U. of Miami; and Jim Fletcher, U. of Ga. Grady School of Journalism will present the committee's written findings to President Steven Altman in two weeks, according to Frank Juge, associate vice president, academic affairs. Juge described the committee as "very knowledgeable about university radio." The committee, having heard Friday's testimony from students, Earth Awareness Presidents Paul Gianini, Valencia, left; Steven Altman, UCF; and Thad- deus Seymour, Rollins, right; plant a tree on the HPB Green to mark the beginning of the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day. For information on other Earth Day activities, see page 8. faculty and community members, will address questions concerning WUCF's mission or goal; the station's relationship to educational programs; WUCF's administrative structure; and the station's staffing arrangements. Q Increased Fees Mean More Lots, Garage Faculty, staff and students who were squeezed out of parking spots by last fall's near record enrollment increase will have some 1300 new spaces available this fall when parking decal fees rise to provide for still more parking, including UCF's first garage. The increased cost of decals will partly fund additional parking areas while a portion will be placed in a trust fund for a future parking garage, according to John Bolte, vice president for administration and finance. Bolte said, 'The fee increases are significant but the parking problems faced by students, faculty and staff during the past year have also been significant." ^__rf_—_—»^—————————————————■———- Parking Decal Fees^ Proposed 1990-91 Category 89-90 Fee 90-91 Fee $$ Increase The 1990-91 decal fees (See Chart) will permit the university to continue construction of additional parking spaces and maintain existing parking lots. It was published every Wednesday during the academic year, and bi-weekly when classes were not in session and during the summer. Its name was changed to UCF Hot Sheet in 2000.
