ARCHIVES Volume 12, Number 23 The University of Central Florida Newspaper for Faculty and Staff June 27,1990 News Clips • June 30 is the deadline for using the personal holiday granted to permanent, full-time USPS employees. Employees are reminded that Wednesday, July 4 is a university holiday. • The university was honored recently with a Community Resource Volunteer award from Seminole County Schools for volunteer work in the school system. • More than 100 people turned out for an organizational meeting of the Volusia/Hagler chapter of the UCF Alumni Association. Alumni who live in Volusia or Flagler counties may contact Sandi O'Neal at 254-4169 or 428-2566 for more information. • Anthony F. DeLia, a senior in physics, is one of 10 college students nationally, and the only one from Horida, to be awarded a $7,500 Mercury Seven Foundation scholarship for 1990-91. The non-profit foundation was created in 1984 by the six surviving members of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and Betty Grissom, widow of the seventh. • Editing equipment valued at more than $250,000 was recently presented to.the university's film program by United Technologies' Living Seas exhibit at EPCOT. • Stuart Omans, Orlando Shakespeare Festival founder and artistic director, has announced the selection of Macbeth and Twelfth Night as the festival's season presentations. The plays will begin March 20, 1991 at Lake Eola Park. • Those of you who knew the former editor of The UCF Report may remember how much he loved UCF's Arboretum. A bench and a plaque will be dedicated to Don Rider at the entrance to the Aboretum, underneath a sycamore tree. Donations may be sent to the UCF Foundation, for the Don Rider Memorial. Look to The UCF Report for further details. Budget Adds Up OK For UCF A "potentially serious and drastic situation" in the 1990 Horida legislative session turned out better than expected for the State University System in general and the University of Central Florida in particular, according to Daniel Holsen- beck, UCF's director of governmental relations. "Relatively speaking, the State University System did reasonably well," Holsen- beck said of the approximately $8.5 billion Department of Education budget that was approved recently. But SUS officials were holding their collective breath up to the last minute of the 1990 session. State lawmakers at one time were considering reductions in administrative salaries, a $20 million-plus cut in the overall SUS budget, a 15 percent cut in ad ministrative expenses, a $5 million cut in research funding and "little funding for new programs of any kind," said Holsenbeck. Construction Projects' Funding Construction projects receiving PECO funding: •Art complex - $690,000 •Daytona Beach GC/UCF joint use facility - $100,000 •Daytona Beach Research Center -$400,000 •Howard Phillips Hall remodeling - $816,000 •Chemistry building renovation/remodeling - $1.5 million •Extension of roads/parking/utilities/fieldhouse - $1.7 million Projects receiving funding from the Capital Improvement Trust Fund (student fees): •Recreational Facilities, asbestos removal - $46,000 •Student Union phase II - $7.1 million •International Student Center - matching funds - $300,000 "We were facing a potentially serious and drastic situation," he said. But heavy lobbying by Chancellor Charles Reed and numerous university presidents helped turn the tide in the session's final few days. UCF President Steven Altman made several trips to Tallahassee at Reed's request to meet with legislative leaders. "It was a combination of more dollars becoming available to the committees working on education and the intensive effort made by the presidents and chancellor," said Holsenbeck. The result was an overall increase to the SUS budget of between 3.5 and 4 percent, he said. All things considered, UCF came away from the 1990 session with its fair share of state funds. Holsenbeck said the university had three basic funding priorities this year: enrollment growth, faculty and staff salaries, and the construction list. "On two of those, we feel we fared fairly well," said Holsenbeck. "Our Please See Budget Page 4 Plans In Motion To Upgrade Radio Station WUCF-FM (89.9), tuning into consultants' recommendations, has set into motion plans to raise needed dollars for equipment and to hire a general manager. Plans call for a three-year, $125,000 fund-raising campaign for new equipment, campus and community listener surveys, and the hiring of a general manager and a student programming director. Most important to student listeners will be an expanded block of prime air time for student-oriented music. President Steven Altman endorsed the thrust of the report, saying, "I accept the report of the WUCF review panel and enthusiastically endorse its main recommendations. The primary mission of the radio station is to serve as the university's public voice in Central Horida in a manner that accommodates the programming interests of the station's diverse listening audience. UCF will work towards implementing the recommendations on a fiscally responsible schedule."
