Volume 15, Number 6 The University of Central Florida newspaper for faculty and staff Oct. 21, 1992 Clips Credit Union robbed at gunpoint, escape Two men robbed the UCF Credit Union at gunpoint on Oct. 5, and escaped with an unspecified amount of cash. The robbery occurred at 7:30 a.m. The men reportedly used duct tape to bind two workers, and locked them in a bathroom. Although the amount stolen has not been released, police said it is much larger than the few thousand dollars normally taken during such crimes. Dead Sea Scrolls focus of lectures UCF's Judaic studies program will sponsor two lectures by Lawrence Schiffman, professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University, as part of the the Judaic Studies Distinguished Lecturers Series. The topic for the first lecture is "Scholars, Scrolls and Scandals: The Dead Sea Scrolls Controversy." It will be held in the visual arts building auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The second lecture, "On Archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls," will be in the visual arts building, room 113, on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 11:30 a.m. For information, call Judaic Studies director Moshe Pelli, x5039, orx2251. Box 2500 Orlando, Florida 32816 Address Correction Requested United Way pledges top $20,000; amount one-third of UCF's goal Time is slipping away for those wishing to donate to this year's United Way campaign- Through the first three week's of the campaign, UCF employees had donated or pledged $20,000. That figure, however, is "far short" of the university's $60,000 goal. The campaign was officially launched on campus on Sept. 16 — more than two weeks later than Florida's United Way campaign — and concludes the end of October. As of Oct. 14, about 250 of the university's nearly 2,000 employees had pledged or donated to United Way. The number of donors and amount pledged were expected to receive a boost early this week when some of the larger departments reported their donations. "We've got a long way to go to reach our goal, and we're really only looking at a couple of weeks left in the campaign," JoEllen Borum, campus campaign co-chair, said last week. A limping economy and back-to-back years without pay raises for state employees are likely hurting the campaign. The campaign's sluggish start concerns Borum. "We're working harder than ever this year," she said of campaign workers, "but it's tough. These are tougher Please see UNITED WAY, page 3 To boldly go where no one has gone before ... NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin looks through a microscope during a tour of UCF, Sept. 23. While visiting the university, Goldin toured NASA projects in the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, CREOL and 1ST. The NASA administrator is one of the highest-ranking officials in the space agency. Classes canceled for inauguration Classes have been canceled for four and one-half hours on Nov. 19 so students, faculty staff, spouses and friends can participate in the inauguration of John Hitt as the university's fourth president. Classes will not take place between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. that day "to permit students and faculty to participate in the inaugural showcase that morning to be followed by the cer emony and reception in the afternoon," Provost Richard Astro said in a memorandum to faculty. The presidential inaugural steering committee requested that the classes be canceled. The inauguration ceremony will highlight a week of activities leading up to the event. The inauguration schedule begins with a tailgate party and the Fighting Knights football game with James Madison in the Citrus Bowl on Nov. 14. Former hostage Terry Anderson will lecture in the UCF arena on Nov. 16. Anderson is chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, and was held captive in Lebanon for seven years. On Nov. 17, an alumni and friends breakfast will be held on the Brevard Please see HITT, page 3 Next issue of The UCF Report is Nov. 4 • Deadline is Oct. 28 Non-Profit Organization U.S. Postage Paid Orlando, Florida Permit No. 3575
