Volume 15, Number 16 The University of Central Florida newspaper for faculty and staff March 17, 1993 Clips Computers easy target for thieves, police warn The University of Florida had approximately $4,000 worth of Macintosh compatible software stolen during a recent two-week span, causing UCF police to warn computer users here to secure their machines and software. The UF thefts were not isolated. At the University of North Florida, recently, approximately $20,000 worth of software was taken. On Feb. 25, about $12,000 in Macintosh software was stolen from a Jacksonville community college. UCF police have issued an alert to remind all computer users, especially Macintosh users, to secure software and hardware. Police also caution members of the university community to be aware of strangers in office areas. Bike ride exercises the heart, raises funds Thousands of Central Floridians are expected to swarm the UCF campus for Orlando's Heartride, Sunday, March 21. Heartride, which features 12- and 25-mile bike races and a two- mile fun ride, will begin at 1 p.m. Funds raised will be used to fight cardiovascular disease. Cost is $15, and forms are available at the American Heart Association office, the UCF Wellness Center and the UCF alumni office. Prizes will be awarded to those who raise various amounts of money. Heartride is sponsored by the UCF Alumni Association, WFTV, Florida Hospital and SWAT. For information, call 843-1330. Photo essay depicts life in the Third World A photographic essay depicting life of the urban poor in the Dominican Republic will be on exhibit at the library throughout March. It features works by photographer C. Jordan Harris. A reception will be held in the library Sunday, March 21,3-4:30 p.m. The exhibit focuses on the people of Santo Domingo, where more than half of the city's population lives in hillside barrios. The exhibit is part of a larger project that Harris is working on in conjunction with the Orlando- based Dominican Foundation Inc. The Foundation and Harris are working on a book that will pictorially document the urban plight and rural beauty there. University of Central Florida P.O. Box 25000 Orlando, FL 32816 Address Correction Requested Police impress stranded motorist Act of kindness convinces mother to send daughter to UCF An act of kindness by two UCF police officers late last month turned into more than a good deed when the motorist they helped pledged to send her daughter to the university. Recruitment was the last thing Robert Coch and Jose McLoughlin had on their minds Feb. 27 when they helped Lynn Home, her daughter Autumn and a friend make it safely to a repair shop to have their car fixed. But a few days after the event, a bouquet of flowers from Home arrived at the police station. A note attached said: "To our knights in shining armor. Thank you so much." Home told officers that the kindness of Coch and McLoughlin convinced her to send Autumn to UCF after she graduated from high school. Before the incident, the family was trying to decide where Autumn would attend school. Marketing fraternity sizzles, collects 12 awards during national convention The University of Central Florida's Delta Delta Chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon collected 12 awards at the PSE 1993 National Convention held here recently. UCF not only hosted the convention, but received more awards than any of the other 65 institutions with PSE chapters. The university placed in 12 of the 14 categories in which awards were presented. PSE is a marketing fraternity with chapters nationwide. The purpose of the convention was to provide workshops for students in a learning and competitive environment. First place award winners with ties to UCF are: alumnus Craig Froehlich, top alumni member; professor Gail Zank, top faculty advisor; students John Hornbeek, first in Pro- Am Sell-a-thon, a competition measuring sales ability; the Delta Delta Chapter, best in PSE's Southeast Region, and first for the marketing research project competition. Delta Delta's entry focused on the effect of billboards on Florida residents. It was published every Wednesday during the academic year, and bi-weekly when classes were not in session and during the summer. Its name was changed to UCF Hot Sheet in 2000.
