Daytona Beach campus student population up Statistics for the fall term show a "remarkable" increase in undergraduate and graduate students attending classes at UCF's Daytona Beach campus. Undergraduate enrollment swelled by 17.5 percent, and graduate enrollment went up 12 percent. Calling the fall the "best term ever," Director Sarah Pappas said, "These growth figures attest to the great need within our community for this type of state higher education institution." The most preferred degree programs at the Daytona Beach campus are in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Health and Public Affairs. Careers for women minorities addressed The UCF Diversity Task Force is sponsoring a live video-conference, called "Women of Color in Higher Education," in the president's board room on Wednesday, March 31,1-3 p.m. Immediately following the video-conference, a panel of key administrators and faculty will share views with emphasis on implications for UCF. The video-conference is open to all. For information, call x2716. Founders' Day honors UCF's outstanding faculty, students Top students and faculty members will be honored during the University of Central Florida's fifth annual Founders' Day Honors Convocation next week. The convocation will be in the visual arts auditorium at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7. As in year's past, classes will be canceled from 10 a.m. to noon so the entire UCF community can attend. The convocation provides a forum in which the university officially recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of students, teachers, advisors, researchers and librarians. Pied Piper Irish flutist James Galway spoke to students in UCF's master's music class March 29. Galway, who is recognized as one of the greatest flutists in the world, was in Orlando for a concert. Special Founders' awards will be presented to a select group of students who have excelled in their work at the university. Awards will also be presented to top faculty members. Also, faculty members who have completed 20 years of service at UCF and those who are retiring this year will be honored. Graduating seniors who have completed honors thesis and who rank in the top 1 percent of their class will also be recognized. Summer schedule expanded UCF students have more classes from which to chose this summer than any in several years. The more extensive schedule of regular classes is the result of UCF's success in meeting enrollment targets in the fall and spring terms. Because of that success the university retained funding that would have been lost. The expanded summer schedule, which is about 25 percent larger than in either of the past two summer sessions, is part of a commitment by university officials to help students make "timely progress towards completion of their education," President John Hitt said. University financial aid officer dies Mel Hagen, a long-time financial aid officer at UCF, passed away on March 19. He was 69. Hagen, who passed away after complications from diabetes, had worked full-time in the student financial aid office for almost four years. Prior to that he had worked part-time. Co-workers said they will miss Hagen's sense of humor and storytelling ability. He was an avid reader and bridge player, and enjoyed photography, trips to Leu Gardens and spending time with his grandson.
