St. Luke's Observes Birthday REV. JOHN J. KIR ARIK of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Slavia which celebrated it. Oth anniversary Sunday, is shown with the church's oldest living ?mber. Kucharik based his sermon on ;"Builders," as taken from Matthew 7:24-29, for the 60th anniversary service of St. .Luke's Lutheran Church. A narration of congregation's history was given by James Colbert. Mres Betty Kohany was organist and Mrs. Judy Duda was choir director. Important date in St. Luke's history was March 17,1912 when the congregation was officially established. During the 1920's, visiting Pastors and Vicar John Bajus served occasionally. On Oct. 15,1933, Rev Stephen Tuny was assigned to St. Luke's for six months, and on July 31,1934, he was installed as pastor. On June 4, 1939, the new church was dedicated and in 1940 English services started. In September of 1947, Christian Day School opened after three years of kindergarten teaching. In 1957, a new addition was built onto the church. Pastor Tuhy died and in May, 1968, Rev John J. Kucharik was installed as pastor. In January of 1971, in the Synodical Merger with the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod accepted St. Luke's as a congregation. Joseph Mikler Jr., a quiet spoken gentleman, said his parents came to the area in 1912, his father was one of the founders of St. Luke's and he has been a member of the church since the age of five. George Jakubcin, who lives in Slavia, has been a member for 60 years and is the oldest living member of the church. He will celebrate his eighty fifth birthday in June.
