Ladies and Gentlemen- although an invitation to address you upon the subject of this evening came upon me rather unexpectedly still I felt not only very willing but very glad to accept, not for various reasons not the least of which, was the sincere hope that I might be an humble instrument in the hands of past history, facts and figures, of awakening the minds and least of directing the attention of the people to a question of vital importance-vital to our continued unity-vital to our future prosperity. I trust however that you will be free from suspicion that I have the slightest expectation or belief that I shall be able to offer any instruction but I merely have done as any one can do thought and looked up a few arguments whom one subject and if what I may say shall have the effect to suggest to you any new ideas or even serve to entertain you or interest you for a short hour I shall feel amply compensated for my attempt.
